Intro to Large Format Photography (SOLD OUT)
Workshop

Large-format photography distinguishes itself from other formats through its unparalleled attention to detail and image quality. The camera allows photographers to capture images with remarkable clarity and a wide tonal range. The slow, meditative process of composing and exposing each image encourages photographers to engage deeply with their subjects.

In this comprehensive 5-week course, participants will learn the intricacies of photographing with a 4x5 view camera. Throughout the workshop, students will gain experience operating the camera, processing negatives and printing their images in the darkroom.

The workshop is limited to 10 participants.

What to Expect:

This workshop assumes a basic knowledge of manual exposure and film photography. In addition to using the BDC lab facilities during class hours, enrolled students will be able to rent the BDC dark room following their class, on Saturday afternoons, and will receive a 40% discount.

What to Bring:

Participants should arrive prepared with a 25-sheet box of Ilford HP5 4x5 film. The BDC will be providing all necessary 4x5 equipment for in-class use.

Instructors:

Sean Sirota is a photographer whose images reflect the lyrical and intimate moments of everyday life. A graduate of SUNY Purchase, he has been awarded several scholarships through Magnum Photos, was a 2022 Magnum Foundation Fellow, and has photographed for publications such as The New York Times, TIME Magazine, The New Yorker, and Vogue Magazine. Sean has worked as an educator at The Bronx Documentary Center since 2017.

Mike Kamber has worked as a journalist for more than 25 years. Between 2002 and 2012, he worked for The New York Times, covering conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Liberia, the Sudan, Somalia, the Congo, and other countries. He was the first person in the history of The New York Times to routinely file photos, videos and written articles to the paper. His photographs have also been published in nearly every major news magazine in the United States and Europe, as well as in many newspapers. He is the winner of a World Press Photo award, the Mike Berger Award, the Society of Professional Journalists Deadline Club Award, American Photo Images of the Year, and was a member of The New York Times team that won a 2003 Overseas Press Club award. The New York Times twice nominated Kamber’s work for the Pulitzer Prize. Kamber founded the Bronx Documentary Center in 2011.
