Two more from the Diane Arbus exhibit in Paris.  (See post below).  Was also interesting to note that she struggled financially to pay for her gear and continue to work.  At one point, MOMA reneged on an offer to buy three of her prints because they didn’t want to pay $75 for the third print.  That print today would probably sell for over $100,000.

The Diane Arbus exhibit at the Jeu de Paume in Paris where crowds have packed the museum for months to see this show.  At the BDC, we pay attention to how images are shown and exhibitions put together.  This exhibition had many “pictures on an empty white wall”—vintage prints loaned by collectors and museums, and the personal effects and notebooks were a wonderful addition.  The contact sheets too were revelatory. Fascinating to see that, though 11 subjects on a 120mm roll might be smiling, the one that got printed was sad and weird. The show gave a real sense of who Diane was, with many wall texts rendering quotes from her writings.

Quote
"What drove me and kept me going over the decades?” Arnold wrote in her memoir. “If I had to use a single word, it would be ‘curiosity.’"

Eve Arnold, the first woman to join the Magnum photo agency, passed away at the age of 99.
