The BDC is pleased to host the 1000 Dreams project from Witness Change. in an exhibition at our gallery. Funding for the New York City work of this project was provided by The Joseph Handleman I Believe in You Foundation; cameras were provided by Sony Electronics, and the Bronx Documentary Center is hosting the exhibition.

1000 Dreams seeks to change prevailing narratives and attitudes toward refugees (and others experiencing forced migration) through a storytelling project that shares the stories of 1000 refugees across Europe and the US. It amplifies stories of people on the move, allowing others to learn about their strengths, their challenges, and their dreams. 1000 Dreams is entirely authored by storytellers with a refugee background.

The interviews and photographs that make up 1000 Dreams have been produced by more than 90 refugees worldwide. Every refugee storyteller has completed a workshop and mentorship program with Witness Change, where they’ve learned photography and interviewing skills.

In April 2024, Witness Change ran a 1000 Dreams workshop in New York City, training eight new refugee storytellers, who collected stories in the New York City area; the pictures and interviews they created are part of this exhibition.
