Lina Soualem’s second feature, Bye, Bye Tiberias, poignantly captures the complexity of Arab women’s lives. Palestine’s official entry for Best International Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and has received several international accolades.

A French-Palestinian-Algerian filmmaker and actress, Lina Soualem graduated in History and Political Science from the Sorbonne. She programmed for the International Human Rights Film Festival in Buenos Aires before debuting as a filmmaker. Her first feature documentary, Their Algeria, premiered at the Visions du Réel International Film Festival in 2020 and garnered multiple international awards. Soualem has also acted in three feature films by Hafsia Herzi, Hiam Abbas, and Rayhana.

A Moroccan reporter based in New York City, Aida Alami is a Columbia School of Journalism graduate whose work spans migration, human rights, religion, and race. She has reported globally, contributing to The New York Times and The New York Review of Books, and was featured in the best-selling book Our Women on the Ground: Essays by Arab Women Reporting from the Arab World. Alami is currently completing a documentary feature on civil rights in France.

This screening is part of the Bronx Documentary Center’s 10th Annual Women’s Film Series, celebrating women in film and media, running from October 18-20, 2024.
