BDC’s Women’s Film Series:
Razing Liberty Square
Sunday, October 20, 2024 · 3 – 5 PM
Bronx Documentary Center
614 Courtlandt Ave, Bronx, NY 10451
Razing Liberty Square explores the intersection of climate change, gentrification, and social justice in Miami’s historic Liberty City. As rising seas threaten Miami’s beachfront, developers are targeting higher ground, making the historically Black neighborhood of Liberty City—once ignored—now highly desirable. At the heart of this neighborhood is Liberty Square, the South’s first segregated public housing project, now being razed for a $300 million mixed-income development.
Katja Esson is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker based in Miami, known for her compelling, character-driven documentaries that address issues of race, class, and gender. Her short Ferry Tales won numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar before premiering on HBO. Other acclaimed works include Hole in the Sky—The Scars of 9/11, Skydancer, and Poetry of Resilience, which earned a Cinema for Peace Award Nomination. Esson has received numerous honors, including the Simons Public Humanities Fellowship at Kansas University.
This event is part of the Bronx Documentary Center’s 10th Annual Women’s Film Series, celebrating women in film and media from October 18-20, 2024.
