JAMAIKA chronicles the lives of residents in Portugal’s Bairro da Jamaica, a neighborhood in flux as homes are demolished and its predominantly African immigrant community—descendants from Portugal’s former colonies—is displaced.

Photographer José Sarmento Matos spent over three years documenting the lives of these families, gaining intimate access to their struggles and resilience. Through powerful images, JAMAIKA captures a community fighting for dignified housing and opportunities amidst an existential crisis.

Join Matos for a presentation of his photobook and a screening of his short film about the neighborhood, followed by a discussion with Marie Monteleone, Enterprise Assignment Photo Editor for Bloomberg News.
