The Bronx Documentary Center presents El Salvador: Legacy of Violence, an exhibition pairing two powerful photographic projects created three decades apart. The work of American photojournalist Robert Nickelsberg and Salvadoran photographer Fred Ramos offers a harrowing reflection on El Salvador’s history, tracing its Cold War legacy to its current political and social crises.

Nickelsberg’s black-and-white photographs, captured during El Salvador’s brutal civil war in the early 1980s, depict life in the countryside alongside jarring images of combat and violence. His work reveals the country’s role as a Cold War battleground, shaped by US intervention and riddled with civilian suffering.

Fred Ramos’ award-winning photography documents El Salvador today, where the country has transitioned from being one of the world’s most violent nations to having the highest incarceration rate under President Nayib Bukele’s widely supported, yet controversial, crackdown on gang violence. Ramos also highlights the plight of Salvadorans undertaking dangerous journeys northward in search of refuge.

Together, these bodies of work invite viewers to confront the cyclical nature of violence, the enduring impact of Cold War-era policies, and the struggles of Salvadorans seeking peace and dignity.
