In November 2021, 26 royal treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey were due to leave Paris and return to their country of origin, the present-day Republic of Benin. Using multiple perspectives, Dahomey questions how these artifacts should be received in a country that has reinvented itself in their absence.
From acclaimed filmmaker Mati Diop (Atlantics), Dahomey is a poetic and immersive work of art that delves into multiple perspectives on issues surrounding appropriation, self-determination and restitution.
Winner of the coveted Golden Bear prize at the 2024 Berlinale, this film is an affecting and singular creation that is as spellbinding as it is essential.
Bio:
Mati Diop was born in Paris: since the early 2000s she has built a varied body of work that has won awards at numerous international festivals. Her first feature, Atlantics (2019), winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes, established her as one of the leading figures in international arthouse cinema and of a new wave in African and diasporic cinema. Her lyrical and political cinema crosses boundaries between genres and formats, as an extension of her dual Franco-Senegalese identity and proud Creoleness.
