UNCROPPED revisits the extraordinary career of James Hamilton, a photographer who chronicled the cultural history of America with his iconic portraits of artists, musicians, and cultural figures. Working for publications such as The Village Voice and Harper’s Bazaar, Hamilton documented an era of vibrant alternative media and New York’s immense cultural influence.

Following the screening, join director D.W. Young and James Hamilton for a Q&A, and experience an outdoor projection of Hamilton’s body of work.

James Hamilton is celebrated as one of America’s great cultural chroniclers. With a career spanning over four decades, his work as a staff photographer for The Village Voice, The New York Observer, and Harper’s Bazaar captured some of the most iconic people and moments of the past half-century. Hamilton’s photography embodies the intersection of art and journalism, offering a unique lens into the heyday of alternative print media.

D.W. Young is an acclaimed documentary filmmaker whose previous work, The Booksellers, premiered at the 2019 New York Film Festival and explored the rare book world. His other projects include the award-winning A Hole in a Fence, the narrative feature The Happy House, and short films such as Dancing on the Silk Razor and A Body of Language. Young’s films have screened at renowned festivals including NYFF, SXSW, and DOC NYC.
