Join photographer José Sarmento Matos for an immersive workshop designed to enhance your street photography skills. This one-day intensive session will focus on mastering available light and creating a cohesive 8-image photo series depicting everyday life in NYC.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Briefing Session: José will provide insights on building a coherent 8-image series, covering topics such as framing, anticipating decisive moments, and utilizing available light and reflections.

  • Instructor Showcase: Gain inspiration as José discusses his recent photography series and documentary work, drawing parallels to the workshop’s objectives.

  • Participant Critique: Engage in a constructive discussion about your work. Participants are encouraged to bring a 5-photo selection with a documentary or street photography theme and a list of 5 challenges they face in their photography.

  • Outdoor Shooting: Apply the techniques discussed during an extended outdoor shooting session.

  • Editing Session: Back at the Bronx Documentary Center, collaborate in a group editing session where José will guide each participant in refining their 8-image series.

About the Instructor:

José Sarmento Matos is a Portuguese documentary photographer with a focus on long-term projects that explore identity and social inequality. Based between London and Lisbon, his work has been featured in prestigious publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. José’s collaborations include projects with Bloomberg, Le Monde, HBO, and HISTORY. In 2024, José published JAMAIKA, a book chronicling the struggles of families in Bairro da Jamaica, Portugal, for decent housing, following three and a half years of close documentation. His film on the same subject premiered at Doc Lisboa 2021. José holds a master’s degree in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism from the London College of Communication, where he also taught from 2016 to 2021. Recognized by Magnum Photos as one of the top 30 photographers under 30 in 2015, José has received numerous accolades, including the Estação Imagem award in 2020 for his project “Where Do I Belong? Abandoning the Venezuelan Dream.”
