About Piragua Art Space:
Piragua Art Space, is a vibrant community hub dedicated to celebrating and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Loisaida. Founded by David Soto, also known as DÄSo, a proud son of the Loisaida, and inspired by his mother Angie Hernandez's pivotal role in reclaiming the Charas community center, Piragua Art Space embodies a legacy of community activism and cultural pride.
This dynamic space hosts a variety of events including pop-up shows, art exhibitions, film screenings, intimate performances, and community activities. Each event at Piragua Art Space honors the entrepreneurial spirit of our ancestors and fosters a deeper connection to our cultural roots.
DÄSo began his artistic journey performing with the Puerto Rican folkloric dance troupe Grupo Cemí. Growing up amidst the vibrant Nuyorican poet and activist community in Loisaida, he learned from esteemed mentors like María Hernández, Bimbo Rivas, Tato Laviera, and Luis Guzmán. His experiences have shaped Piragua Art Space into a place where culture and creativity thrive.
Piragua Art Space is also part of Daso Entertainment, which includes Daso Music, New Village Music Festival, Dekora Digital Records, and Piragua Brand. We are proud to support the Ave C Cultural Corridor and thrilled to participate in the Bronx Documentary Center's Latin American Foto Festival, continuing our mission to celebrate and nurture the unique heritage and creative spirit of Loisaida. @piraguaartspace

About La Sala de Pepe
La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio is a new kind ‘social club’: an art space where the past meets the future, a salon where ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, photographers, media makers, cultural activists and community elders share their knowledge with the next generation. We work to fight the tide of cultural amnesia by honoring the past, celebrating the present and incubating the future.
La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio,, founded in 2021, is a unique artistic collaboration brought into existence by two longtime friends and East Village residents: Ethnomusicologist Jose (Pepe) Flores, and Visual Anthropologist/Curator Lyn Pentecost.
Flores, recognized as one of the premier authorities on Latin Music today, hosts salon style workshops and conversations with working musicians and scholars from the Hispanic diaspora and contemporary Latinx community. Every visit to La Sala de Pepe also provides a visual feast, a rotating series of curated photography, film and design exhibitions. Foto Espacio builds on Pentecost’s decades of launching community photography programs, curating exhibitions, and building relationships with national and international photographers.
La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio is excited to be part of the Ave C Cultural Corridor and the Loisaida Arts Renaissance and grateful for the invitation to participate in the Bronx Documentary Center’s Latin American Foto Festival.

La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio es un nuevo tipo de ‘club social’: un espacio artístico donde el pasado se encuentra con el futuro, un salón donde etnomusicólogos, antropólogos, fotógrafos, creadores de medios, activistas culturales y ancianos de la comunidad comparten su conocimiento con la próxima generación. Trabajamos para combatir la marea de la amnesia cultural honrando el pasado, celebrando el presente e incubando el futuro.
La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio, fue fundada en 2021, es una colaboración artística única creada por dos amigos de toda la vida y residentes del East Village: el etnomusicólogo José (Pepe) Flores y la antropóloga visual y curadora Lyn Pentecost.
Flores, reconocido como una de las principales autoridades de música latina en la actualidad, organiza talleres y conversaciones al estilo de salón con músicos y académicos de la diáspora hispana y la comunidad contemporánea Latinx. Cada visita a La Sala de Pepe también ofrece un festín visual, con una serie rotativa de exposiciones curadas de fotografía, cine y diseño. Foto Espacio se basa en las décadas de experiencia de Pentecost y en el lanzamiento de programas comunitarios de fotografía, curaduría de exposiciones y en las relaciones con fotógrafos nacionales e internacionales.
La Sala de Pepe y Foto Espacio están emocionados de ser parte del Corredor Cultural de la Ave C y del Renacimiento de las Artes de Loisaida, y agradece la invitación para ser parte del Festival de Fotografía Latinoamericana del Bronx Documentary Center.

About the BDC’s Latin American Foto Festival:
The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) presents the 7th annual Latin American Foto Festival (LAFF) from July 11-28, showcasing large-scale photos by emerging and award-winning photographers in the South Bronx’s Melrose neighborhood. This year, the festival expands to five new locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.
