Bios:

Medhin Tewolde Serrano, an Eritrean-Mexican from Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, has lived in Chiapas for over a decade. Trained in documentary filmmaking, she is dedicated to telling the stories of marginalized communities.

Singer/songwriter David Soto, also known as DāSo, began his musical journey as a child performing with his mom in Grupo Cemí. Growing up in Loisaida, NYC, he was influenced by mentors like María Hernández and Tato Laviera, honing his craft in venues like the Nuyorican Poets Café. As a community organizer and founder of DASO Entertainment, he also created the New Village Music Festival and Piragua Art Space, promoting arts, culture, and wellness. @dasomonster

Piragua Art Space, is a vibrant community hub dedicated to celebrating and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Loisaida. Founded by David Soto, also known as DāSo, a proud son of the Loisaida, and inspired by his mother Angie Hernandez's pivotal role in reclaiming the Charas community center, Piragua Art Space embodies a legacy of community activism and cultural pride.

This dynamic space hosts a variety of events including pop-up shows, art exhibitions, film screenings, intimate performances, and community activities. Each event at Piragua Art Space honors the entrepreneurial spirit of our ancestors and fosters a deeper connection to our cultural roots.

DāSo began his artistic journey performing with the Puerto Rican folkloric dance troupe Grupo Cemí. Growing up amidst the vibrant Nuyorican poet and activist community in Loisaida, he learned from esteemed mentors like María Hernández, Bimbo Rivas, Tato Laviera, and Luis Guzmán. His experiences have shaped Piragua Art Space into a place where culture and creativity thrive.

Piragua Art Space is also part of Daso Entertainment, which includes Daso Music, New Village Music Festival, Dekora Digital Records, and Piragua Brand. We are proud to support the Ave C Cultural Corridor and thrilled to participate in the Bronx Documentary Center’s Latin American Foto Festival, continuing our mission to celebrate and nurture the unique heritage and creative spirit of Loisaida. @piraguaartspace

About The Loisaida Center
Loisaida, a prominent 1970s grassroots movement that emerged in the Lower East Side (LES) neighborhood, also known as Loisaida (a spanish-pronounced phonetic blend of Lower East Side) was driven by the fervent leadership of Puerto Rican community organizers and artists. Throughout this era and the subsequent decades, these leaders made notable cultural and socio-political contributions, mobilizing the community politically and fostering cultural identity through artistic and place-keeping endeavors that promoted positive change in the neighborhood, now more commonly known as Alphabet City.

The Loisaida Center, established in 1979, is a multidisciplinary community development organization, focusing on the economic and social empowerment of Latinx/o/e residents through youth development programs and social services spanning decades. The center stands committed to education, arts, culture, partnerships and collaborations, building on its legacy of innovation for years to come.

The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) presents the 7th annual Latin American Foto Festival (LAFF) from July 11-28, showcasing large-scale photos by emerging and award-winning photographers in the South Bronx’s Melrose neighborhood. This year, the festival expands to five new locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.
